Why NBA League Pass is trending: sportsbooks are tying it to NFL bets

Searches for NBA League Pass are spiking because sportsbooks are bundling three free months of it into sign up offers for Sunday night's Cowboys-Packers game.

Why NBA League Pass is trending right now

NBA League Pass is trending on Google because it turned into a sign up incentive for NFL betting. Multiple sportsbooks are advertising three free months of the NBA's streaming package to anyone who creates a new account and places a small wager on this weekend's NFL games, and that pairing is what is pulling search traffic toward League Pass, not anything happening on an NBA court yet.

Google Trends logged the search as breaking out with traffic above 500 queries, which is enough to register as a spike even though nothing changed about what League Pass offers or costs. The subscription did not get cheaper or add new games. It just became a marketing hook.

Both CBS Sports and FOX Sports ran versions of the same offer this week, tying League Pass to coverage of Sunday night's Cowboys at Packers game and to NBA opening night. It is an odd way for a basketball streaming product to become the day's top search term, and it says more about how sportsbooks package their promotions than about anything the NBA itself did.

What's actually happening on the court

The league gave people a real reason to care before the sportsbooks got involved. Opening night paired the Boston Celtics against Cade Cunningham and the Detroit Pistons, then LeBron James and Jaylen Brown making their first appearances for the Philadelphia 76ers against the defending champion New York Knicks. The night closed with reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder against Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs.

That is three different storylines in one night. A rebuilding Pistons team built around a young point guard, a retooled 76ers roster testing itself against the champs, and a matchup between two of the conference's best players. Any one of those is a better reason to search for League Pass than a sportsbook bundle.

The NFL game sitting next to all of it

The reason League Pass got pulled into NFL coverage at all is Sunday night's Cowboys at Packers game, kicking off at 8:20 p.m. ET in Week 6 of the 2026 season. Dallas is dealing with its own issues up front. Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is inactive because of a hamstring injury, which is the real NFL storyline heading into that game, not a guess about who wins it.

The takeaway

NBA League Pass trending has almost nothing to do with NBA League Pass. It is a byproduct of sportsbooks using a basketball perk to pull in football bettors, which is a strange loop but a telling one about how sports media sells subscriptions now. The actual basketball, James and Brown in Philadelphia, Gilgeous-Alexander and Wembanyama out west, is still the better reason to find the remote.

None of that needed a sportsbook attached to it. The league put together a full slate of star power for one night, and that usually does the job of getting people to find their way to League Pass on its own.
