Evans leaves Monday night's win with Achilles soreness

Mike Evans couldn't finish the 49ers' 23-17 win over the Commanders on Monday night, leaving with the same right Achilles soreness that kept him off the practice field all week. Coach Kyle Shanahan ruled him out early in the third quarter after Evans aggravated the injury late in the second. What's not yet clear is whether Evans will be able to play Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, the Niners' last game before their Week 8 bye.

Evans had not practiced Thursday, Friday or Saturday, but he told Shanahan he felt confident enough to play. Shanahan called it a pretty close call given the week Evans had, but said the confidence Evans showed was enough to let him suit up, even though the staff knew going in that he might not make it through the whole game.

How it happened

With 1:10 left in the second quarter and the 49ers leading 13-3, quarterback Brock Purdy found Evans breaking inside on second-and-15 from the Commanders' 28 for a 16-yard gain. Commanders safety Jeremy Reaves brought him down, and Evans stayed on the ground stretching his right leg before San Francisco's medical staff helped him up and he walked straight to the locker room.

The 49ers first listed Evans as questionable to return, then ruled him out early in the third quarter. He finished with three catches for 94 yards, and San Francisco's offense had already piled up 303 yards and 20 points by halftime.

Washington made the Niners pay for it

San Francisco held a big lead at the break, but the offense stalled once Evans was done for the night. The 49ers managed only three points and 72 yards in the second half, including three straight three-and-outs in the fourth quarter, as Washington's defense dialed up the blitz and dared San Francisco's other receivers, Jordan Watkins, Brandin Cooks, Jacob Cowing and Malik Turner, to beat it without Evans on the field.

The lead held anyway. Washington mounted a big second-half comeback, but San Francisco won 23-17, with those final two and a half quarters without its top target showing how much of the offense had been running through Evans.

What's next for Evans

Shanahan said Evans has dealt with Achilles tendonitis before and doesn't believe further testing or imaging will be needed. "It's something that he's had before," Shanahan said, adding that with Evans' Achilles tendonitis, "it kind of is what it is."

The 49ers play the Falcons on Sunday before their Week 8 bye. Shanahan said the soreness cost Evans two quarters on Monday, that he hopes Evans recovers during the week, and that he does not think it is a long-term issue. If Evans can't go Sunday, Shanahan said the rest of the receiving group will have to step up, with the goal of getting him healthy again after the bye.
