Viktor Gyökeres could leave Arsenal in January amid lack of playing time

Arsenal forward Viktor Gyökeres is reportedly ready to push for a January move after being limited to three Premier League appearances, all off the bench, this season.

Why Arsenal is trending

Arsenal is trending because forward Viktor Gyökeres is reportedly ready to push for a move away from the club in the January transfer window. TEAMtalk first reported the story, and it was picked up by ESPN on October 18, 2026, and by BBC Sport's gossip column a day earlier, on October 17.

The reports say the frustration comes down to playing time. Gyökeres joined Arsenal from Sporting CP in a deal reported at £55 million, just over a year ago. He scored 21 goals across all competitions for the club last season, but this season he has featured in only three Premier League matches, and every one of those came off the bench, according to TEAMtalk's report. That drop in minutes comes despite Arsenal paying a club record fee for a striker when they signed him, which is part of why the report has drawn attention this week.

The numbers behind the frustration

Three substitute appearances is a steep drop for a player coming off a 21 goal season. Neither ESPN nor BBC Sport reports any injury or disciplinary issue behind the reduced role, just a change in how often Gyökeres starts. Arsenal has not issued a public comment on the report, and no transfer request has been confirmed by the club. ESPN's transfer roundup groups the Gyökeres story among its trending rumors for October 18, a sign of how much traffic the report has drawn since TEAMtalk's version first circulated.

Who could come calling, and Arsenal's other transfer lines

ESPN's report names Atletico Madrid as an interested party, and adds that clubs in Italy, Germany and Spain have been outlined as possible destinations, without naming them. BBC Sport's gossip roundup, also sourced to TEAMtalk, repeats the Atletico Madrid interest.

Arsenal has other transfer lines in the news this week. Sport Witness, as relayed by BBC Sport, reports that Arsenal and Manchester United have ruled out any interest in Sporting and Uruguay left back Maxi Araujo, 26. Separately, TEAMtalk reports that Arsenal and Chelsea are tracking 17-year-old IFK Göteborg midfielder Oliver Mansson, who has played 17 times across all competitions this season. Mansson is under contract with Göteborg through 2028 and cannot move to the Premier League until next August, when he turns 18.

What is not known yet, and what happens next

No transfer fee, destination or timetable has been reported. TEAMtalk's story describes Gyökeres as prepared to leave, not as having requested a transfer, and Arsenal has not said whether it would sell him in January.

The January transfer window is the earliest point any move could happen. Until it opens, the number worth watching is the same one driving the story now, how many Premier League minutes Gyökeres gets between now and then. Arsenal and the player have not addressed the report directly, so for now it remains a transfer rumor rather than a confirmed move, and nothing changes until a bid or a request becomes public.
