Tennessee holds off Alabama 26-10 as Crimson Tide drop second straight game
No. 14 Tennessee beat No. 6 Alabama 26-10 at Neyland Stadium, handing the Crimson Tide their first back-to-back regular-season losses since 2007.
Tennessee's defense throttles Alabama
No. 14 Tennessee beat No. 6 Alabama 26-10 on Saturday at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Volunteers improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the SEC. Alabama fell to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the league, and the loss put the Crimson Tide in a spot they had not been in since 2007: back-to-back regular-season losses, coming a week after also falling to No. 1 Georgia.
Tennessee has now won three of its last five games against Alabama after dropping 15 straight in the series. All three of those wins have come at home, Neyland included.
Bishop breaks it open after a slow start
The first half was a defensive slog. The teams combined for five turnovers and were a combined 3 of 17 on third down. Alabama managed just 93 yards of total offense before halftime and went 0 for 7 on third down. Four Cooper Ranvier field goals and a late Conor Talty kick left Tennessee ahead 12-10 at the break, with Alabama's only touchdown a 19-yard run by quarterback Keelon Russell.
Running back DeSean Bishop had 64 yards at halftime. He finished with 159 yards and two touchdowns, both 5-yard runs, one in the third quarter and one with 3:17 left in the fourth after a drive that ate up 9 minutes and 32 seconds. Bishop piled up 95 yards after halftime alone.
The numbers Alabama couldn't get past
Tennessee out-gained Alabama 347 yards to 201. George MacIntyre threw for 197 yards, going 21 of 31 with one interception, and leaned on a run game that totaled 150 yards behind Bishop. Wide receiver Mike Matthews caught seven passes for 85 yards. On defense, Amare Campbell led Tennessee with eight tackles and Jeremiah Telander had two sacks.
Alabama's offense never found a rhythm. Russell finished 19 of 29 for 147 yards with two interceptions to go with his one touchdown. Running back Daniel Hill managed just 34 yards on seven carries, and receiver Rico Scott led the team with four catches for 54 yards. The Tide finished 2 of 13 on third down and turned the ball over four times, losing two fumbles on top of Russell's two picks. Linebacker Caleb Woodson had 11 tackles to lead Alabama, and Yhonzae Pierre had a sack.
What they said
"Defense, suffocating, elite performance. Really proud of those guys," Tennessee coach Josh Heupel said after the win. He also credited Bishop's second-half burst: "(Bishop) is a special back. Smart, tough, physical, great vision."
Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer pointed to Tennessee's ground game as the difference: "The key was they were able to run the football." Russell said the issue wasn't the road environment at Neyland, just his own grasp of the game plan that day.
