UCLA has 'serious concern' over QB Iamaleava's knee injury
UCLA coach Bob Chesney says there is a serious concern over quarterback Nico Iamaleava's knee after he left Saturday's 17-15 win at Oregon, with no timeline yet.
Why this is trending
UCLA coach Bob Chesney said Monday there is a "serious concern" over quarterback Nico Iamaleava's knee, the injury that forced him out of Saturday's 17-15 win at Oregon. That is the extent of what UCLA has confirmed. Chesney said he is waiting for doctors to make the final call before putting any timeline on it, and that Iamaleava had a meeting Monday that would bring a lot more clarity on where things stand. So the known part is that Iamaleava got hurt and missed most of the second half. The unknown part is how bad the knee is and when he might be back. Chesney said that update comes once doctors are finished, and he is not getting ahead of them.
Iamaleava went down on a second-quarter scramble, landing awkwardly as he was being tackled. Athletic trainers came out, checked him and he was able to jog to the sideline. Senior Ty Dieffenbach, who hadn't played a single snap all season, came in and threw an incompletion, and then Iamaleava jogged back out for one more play. He threw an interception on that play, his third turnover of the first half, and that was the last UCLA saw of him Saturday.
The hit nobody flagged
Broadcast replay showed Oregon defensive lineman Bear Alexander twisting Iamaleava's helmet during the tackle, then appearing to punch him and strike his helmet again once he was already on the ground. No penalty was called on the play. Chesney called it "egregious" when he spoke to reporters Monday, two days after the game, and said it is a shame officials missed it as it happened.
Dieffenbach steps in
With Iamaleava done for the day, Dieffenbach, a senior who transferred in from Cal Poly, took over at halftime and completed 3 of 6 passes for 43 yards and a touchdown, enough to close out the 17-15 win. The result pushed UCLA to 5-0 and lifted the Bruins to No. 12 in this week's AP poll. Nico Iamaleava has started every game for UCLA since transferring in from Tennessee in spring 2025, and he has thrown for 982 yards and four touchdowns this season heading into the injury.
What happens next
Chesney called the quarterback picture "decently fluid" between Dieffenbach and sophomore Madden Iamaleava, Nico's younger brother, who has appeared in three career games this season. UCLA has not named a starter for Saturday's home game against Wisconsin, and that game has not been played yet, so there is no result to report there. Chesney said the full picture on Nico Iamaleava's knee will come after medical evaluations, and he is not setting a return date until doctors weigh in on it.
