What happened to Terry McLaurin

Terry McLaurin has a torn patellar tendon in his left knee and is done for the season, coach Dan Quinn said after Washington's 23-17 loss at San Francisco. McLaurin got hurt late in the first quarter on Monday while cutting on a route, the same play that ended with a sack of quarterback Jayden Daniels. That is why Terry McLaurin is the name everybody is searching today. The Commanders' most visible receiver just had his season ended by a non-contact injury, and it puts his future in Washington in question.

Quinn did not sugarcoat it. "Man, he brings a lot on and off the field," he said. "It's a big hit, and we'll lean on a number of guys." McLaurin finished Monday with one catch for 27 yards before leaving. The 49ers held on from there, winning 23-17 to drop Washington further off track.

The hit to Washington's offense

Before the injury, McLaurin led the Commanders with 230 yards receiving on 15 catches this season. This is not his first missed time either. He sat out the Week 4 game against the Indianapolis Colts after hurting his hamstring two days before kickoff, then returned a week later. Last season was worse. He sat out seven games in 2025, snapping a streak of 72 straight games played that had made him one of the league's most durable receivers.

Washington will turn to Treylon Burks, Dyami Brown and rookie Antonio Williams to cover the target share. Stefon Diggs, who has started opposite McLaurin all season, now becomes the clear top target for Jayden Daniels the rest of the way.

What this means for McLaurin's future

There is a business layer to this too. McLaurin signed a three-year extension in 2025 after sitting out all of training camp during the negotiation. The deal gives Washington the option to release him after this season or restructure the contract. If they keep him as is, he counts $34 million against the cap next year and $39.5 million in 2028. Releasing him would save the Commanders roughly $8.5 million in cap space.

That math matters because of who McLaurin is to this franchise. He came in as a third-round pick in 2019 and became the emotional center of the offense through five straight losing seasons, the Dan Snyder investigations and the sale of the team. He played with 13 different starting quarterbacks before Daniels arrived in 2024, and this season marked the first time he opened back-to-back years with the same quarterback. He was named a team captain for 2026.

What's next for the Commanders

Before all of this, McLaurin had been about as consistent as it gets, with five straight 1,000-yard seasons from 2020 through 2024. Now Washington has to figure out its passing game without him for the rest of the year, and the front office has to decide this offseason whether this is the end of his run with the team that made him a fan favorite in the first place.
