Seahawks hold off Chargers 30-23, Los Angeles falls to 0-4
Emanuel Wilson ran for a score and caught one as Seattle survived a penalty-filled mess at Lumen Field to beat the Chargers 30-23.
Wilson carries Seattle past the Chargers
Emanuel Wilson took over a banged-up backfield and gave Seattle everything it needed. He rushed 21 times for 81 yards and a touchdown, then added a 23-yard touchdown catch from Sam Darnold in the first quarter. Darnold finished 13 of 22 for 168 yards and two touchdowns, though he also threw an interception. The Seahawks moved to 3-1 with the 30-23 win at home.
Chaos from the opening snap
Both teams coughed up the ball on their very first offensive play. Seattle's Drake Thomas picked off Justin Herbert on the Chargers' opening snap, and on Seattle's first play from scrimmage, Tuli Tuipulotu returned the favor by intercepting Darnold. Los Angeles also lost a fumbled punt return, recovered by Seattle's Connor O'Toole. It set the tone for a game both sides will want to clean up on film.
Seattle finished with 14 penalties for 150 yards, and the Chargers had 16 penalties for 130 yards to go with four turnovers. Despite all that, Seattle built a 27-6 lead by the third quarter before Los Angeles clawed its way back into it.
Herbert and the Chargers can't close the gap
Justin Herbert threw for 189 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted twice and sacked four times for 35 yards. Omarion Hampton ran for 45 yards and a score on nine carries, and Tre' Harris caught three passes for 60 yards. Cameron Dicker made three field goals and Kimani Vidal caught a touchdown pass as Los Angeles pulled within a score before Dicker's 36-yard field goal with 2:14 left made it 30-23. The Chargers dropped to 0-4. Coach Jim Harbaugh pointed to the fight in his locker room, saying he saw a "never say die attitude" throughout the team.
Injuries pile up on both sides
Seattle will be without running back Zach Charbonnet for the season after knee surgery, and Ty Okada and Chazz Surratt are also out. Leonard Williams is questionable with an ankle issue. Los Angeles has its own list, with Rashawn Slater, Brenen Thompson, Dalvin Tomlinson and Charlie Kolar all sidelined. Seattle sits at 3-1 and the Chargers are 0-4, still looking for their first win of the season.
