49ers beat Broncos 24-14 to stay undefeated at 4-0
Brock Purdy threw two touchdown passes and San Francisco scored on three straight second-half drives to hand Denver its second loss in a row.
Niners grind out another one
San Francisco is 4-0 after beating Denver 24-14 at Levi's Stadium on a hot Sunday afternoon. It was not pretty for three quarters. The 49ers managed just three points on seven possessions before a fumbled punt return by Denver's Marvin Mims Jr. handed them the ball and a short field in the third quarter.
Brock Purdy cashed that turnover in with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Deebo Samuel Sr., and from there San Francisco scored on three straight possessions. A 74-yard drive ended with Christian McCaffrey punching one in from a yard out, and George Kittle turned a short screen pass into a 56-yard touchdown with 2:15 left to put the game away.
Purdy finished 19 of 30 for 218 yards and two touchdowns, with no turnovers and no sacks taken for the fourth straight game. "We wanted to break through whatever that was and just be ourselves," Purdy said afterward.
The numbers
San Francisco out-gained Denver 358 yards to 296 and won the penalty battle by a wide margin, just 1 flag for 5 yards against the Broncos' 7 for 44. The 49ers also ran the ball well, with McCaffrey going for 52 yards and a score on 15 carries as part of a 140-yard team rushing total.
Denver's offense moved the ball through the air behind Bo Nix, who went 25 of 42 for 214 yards and a touchdown, but the Broncos could never get the run game going. J.K. Dobbins led Denver with just 40 yards on 11 carries. Rookie RJ Harvey was Nix's top target out of the backfield with 10 catches for 68 yards.
Linebackers led both defenses in tackles. Alex Singleton paced Denver with 14 stops, and Dre Greenlaw had 12 for San Francisco. Mike Evans led all receivers with 76 yards on 5 catches for the 49ers.
Denver's rally falls short
Denver did not go away quietly. After Wil Lutz hit a 40-yard field goal to open the fourth quarter, the Broncos got a Bo Nix touchdown pass to Jaylen Waddle from 13 yards out, and Tyler Badie ran in the two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 17-14 with 4:05 left.
That push ran into a defense missing both starting cornerbacks. Denver's day got harder with Pat Surtain II and Riley Moss both listed questionable, and the secondary had no answer for Kittle's late touchdown, which sealed it. Kittle, who turns 33 on Friday, said simply, "I ran the entire time with a smile on my face."
Broncos coach Sean Payton put it plainly afterward: "We just didn't have enough offense to get a lead." Denver falls to 2-2 overall and 0-2 on the road, while San Francisco moves to 3-0 at home.
Injury report
San Francisco listed Marques Sigle (ankle) and Kyle Juszczyk (knee) as questionable, with Jordan James out for coach's decision and James Thompson Jr. out with an ankle sprain. Denver's injury list was headlined by Surtain (ankle) and Pat Bryant (right ankle) as questionable, along with Riley Moss (ribs) questionable and Dallen Bentley out for coach's decision.
San Francisco heads into next week still unbeaten, while Denver will look to find answers on both sides of the ball after dropping to 0-2 away from home.
