Red Sox edge Cubs 4-3 at Fenway Park
Boston clawed back from an early three-run hole and beat Chicago 4-3 at Fenway Park on Sept. 25.
Cubs jump out early
The Cubs put this one away early, or thought they had. Chicago scored a run in the first inning and two more in the second, building a 3-0 cushion before Fenway Park even settled in.
From there the Cubs linescore goes flat. Zeros in the third through ninth. Whatever they did in those first two innings, they didn't find it again.
Boston chips away
The Red Sox answered one inning at a time instead of all at once. A run in the third got them on the board. Two more came in the fifth to tie it up. A single run in the seventh put Boston ahead for good.
Final score: Red Sox 4, Cubs 3. Boston's line reads 0-0-1-0-2-0-1-0, three different innings doing the work instead of one big swing.
Where both teams stand
Boston moves to 86-74 on the season. Chicago falls to 88-72. Two clubs playing out the stretch, and on this Friday at Fenway, the home team found a way to erase a three-run deficit without needing extra innings to do it.
Injury report
Boston is still without Tanner Houck, out on the 60-day injured list with an elbow issue, and Johan Oviedo, also 60-day IL with an elbow. Catcher Anthony Seigler is on the 10-day IL with a wrist injury.
Chicago has its own list. Phil Maton is out 60 days with a knee injury, Hunter Harvey is on the 60-day IL with a triceps issue, and Tyler Austin is out 60 days with a knee injury. Neither bullpen nor bench is at full strength right now.
