Why AJ Dybantsa is trending

AJ Dybantsa is trending because the Wizards' No. 1 overall pick left Friday's preseason finale after hurting his left ankle, and the team says he will undergo further evaluation. That is the whole story right now, so here is what we actually know, what we do not, and what happens next.

What we know: Dybantsa went down in the second quarter, left the game, and the Wizards are calling it a mild ankle sprain. What we do not know: how long he might be out, or whether it touches his availability for the regular season opener. What happens next: more evaluation, by the team's own account, before there is anything firmer to report.

How it happened

Dybantsa landed awkwardly on his left ankle after a midrange jump shot. He went down to the floor, got back up, and limped to the locker room. He did not return to the game.

What the Wizards said

Wizards coach Brian Keefe told sideline reporter Chase Hughes that Dybantsa had suffered a mild ankle sprain. Keefe said the decision to hold him out for the rest of the game was more precautionary than anything else.

"We'll look at it more when we get more information," Keefe said. That is the extent of the team's comment so far.

What's next

Before the injury, Dybantsa had scored 12 points in 15 minutes. The Wizards open the regular season Wednesday against the Milwaukee Bucks. There is no word yet on whether Dybantsa is expected to play that night, so we are not going to guess at it.
