Giants place Tyrone Tracy Jr. on injured reserve with hamstring injury
The Giants placed running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, meaning he will miss at least four games while Devin Singletary and Cam Skattebo share the workload.
Why Tyrone Tracy Jr. is trending
The New York Giants placed running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, general manager Joe Schoen announced Tuesday. Tracy must miss a minimum of four games, which means his season is on hold while the Giants lean on Devin Singletary and Cam Skattebo in the backfield.
Schoen said he does not believe the injury will keep Tracy out long term, but the four game minimum is set once a player goes on injured reserve. Tracy said he first felt the hamstring during practice earlier last week, then left Sunday's 27-21 win over the Houston Texans in the first half after logging 10 offensive snaps to Skattebo's 13. What is not yet known is an exact return date beyond that four game floor.
What happens next is straightforward. The Giants are on their bye week and are signing running back Greg Desrosiers off the Los Angeles Chargers' practice squad to fill Tracy's roster spot. New York's next game is Nov. 7 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
How Tracy got hurt
Tracy left Sunday's win over Houston early, exiting after 10 offensive snaps in the first half. He had already scored a rushing touchdown in the first quarter, part of a stretch in which he found the end zone in consecutive weeks. Tracy tied his season high with six carries in less than a half of work before coming out of the game.
Devin Singletary scored the game-winning touchdown in that 27-21 win over the Texans. Schoen pointed to both Singletary and Skattebo as the answer for now. "We have lots of confidence in Skattebo and Singletary," Schoen said, adding that the staff will also see what Desrosiers can offer.
Backfield math without Tracy
Skattebo carried the bigger workload Sunday, rushing for a career-high 124 yards, including 97 in the second half. That came a week after he was demoted and did not get a single carry in a loss to the New Orleans Saints. Singletary is expected to take on a bigger role as well with Tracy out.
Tracy, 26, came into the season set to share the workload with Skattebo. A missed block in the preseason sent quarterback Jaxson Dart to the injury tent, and a fumble in the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys put Tracy in the doghouse for several weeks, limiting him to mostly special teams and just two carries over three games before he worked his way back into the mix.
Trade talk and Tracy's track record
Schoen did not close the door on a trade, and there has been speculation about Indianapolis running back Jonathan Taylor's availability. Schoen said the Giants have been in contact with teams that have already started making moves and have a good idea of who might be available, but any deal has to make sense short term and long term. The Giants are already without fourth- and fifth-round picks in the 2027 draft, which limits what they can offer.
Tracy, a fifth-round pick out of Iowa, topped 1,000 all-purpose yards in each of his first two seasons with the Giants. This year he has 55 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. New York is 4-2-1 heading into its bye.
