Why Jamal Wallace is trending

Utah has suspended senior defensive tackle Jamal Wallace indefinitely from the football program after an Oct. 11 arrest, and ESPN reports he is also under investigation for the alleged rape of a woman he had been dating on and off, who says he shared videos of the encounter on social media. The school said it was made aware of the situation the same day as the arrest and immediately placed Wallace on indefinite suspension.

Wallace has not been charged with sexual assault as of ESPN's Wednesday report. The charges he does face are five misdemeanor counts of distributing an intimate image, tied directly to the Oct. 11 arrest, according to both ESPN and FOX 13 News Utah.

What the arrest documents allege

According to a probable cause statement obtained by multiple outlets, the woman told police she and Wallace had been dating on and off. She said that during a conversation about their relationship on Oct. 9, he forced her to perform oral sex and then forcibly had sex with her, and that he hit her several times. She said she later learned Wallace had used her phone to record the encounter and shared videos of it with five people on Snapchat, per the documents.

Salt Lake City police said they found two sexually explicit videos on the woman's phone and determined the phone had been in Wallace's possession when the videos were made, ESPN reported. FOX 13 reported investigators also found that Wallace had used the woman's social media account during the time of the alleged assault to reply to other men who had messaged her, which he told the officer made him upset.

Wallace's response and Utah's statement

Wallace denied sexually assaulting the woman when interviewed by a Salt Lake City police officer, according to the arrest documents cited by both outlets. He said he had gone into her social media account only to see who she had been talking to, and made the same claim about the image distribution counts.

Utah's statement on the matter was brief. The school said it was made aware of the situation with Wallace on Oct. 11 and placed him on indefinite suspension from the program that day. "We take these matters seriously," the school said, adding that because it is a pending legal matter it has no further comment at this time.

What's known, what isn't, and what's next

Wallace was released on $5,000 bail under a set of court-ordered conditions, FOX 13 reported, including a requirement to appear for all court proceedings, avoid any new criminal offenses, complete daily check-ins and attend twice-monthly meetings. No charges have been filed in connection with the rape and forcible sodomy investigation as of this week, and no court date tied to that investigation has been reported.

Wallace is a Kansas City, Missouri, native who transferred to Utah after playing in six games at Tennessee in 2025. He had appeared in one game for the Utes, the season opener against Idaho, before the Oct. 11 arrest and suspension.
