Bruins survive a mess in Eugene

No. 21 UCLA beat No. 13 Oregon 17-15 at Autzen Stadium on Saturday in a game that turned into a turnover parade. The two teams combined for 10 turnovers, seven of them by Oregon, and UCLA still needed a late fumble recovery to close it out. UCLA improved to 5-0. Oregon dropped to 3-2 with a second loss, which hurts any outside shot at the College Football Playoff.

Wayne Knight carried the Bruins. He ran for 103 yards on 22 carries, including a 35-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and added a 9-yard touchdown catch in the fourth. That second score put UCLA up 17-6 and turned out to be the margin.

Iamaleava goes down, Dieffenbach answers

UCLA starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava went down with a lower-leg injury late in the first half and did not return. He finished 10 of 17 for 162 yards with two interceptions. Backup Ty Dieffenbach stepped in and threw for 43 yards, including the touchdown pass to Knight that made it 17-6 in the fourth quarter.

Oregon answered. Quarterback Brock Thomas found Evan Stewart for a 44-yard touchdown with 2:16 left to cut it to 17-15. UCLA was flagged for a facemask penalty on the two-point try that followed, giving Oregon a second attempt from a half-yard out, but the conversion run by Jordon Davison failed. Oregon got the ball back with less than a minute left, but a lost fumble ended the drive and the game.

Turnovers buried the Ducks

Oregon finished with seven turnovers to UCLA's three, and the stat sheet shows it. The Ducks were outgained 345 to 272 in total yards and lost the penalty battle too, nine flags for 78 yards to UCLA's five for 45. Oregon's only offensive touchdown came on that late Stewart catch. Dylan Raiola made his first start at quarterback for Oregon, filling in for Dante Moore, who remains in concussion protocol. Brock Thomas ended up as Oregon's leading passer, going 11 of 15 for 156 yards and a touchdown.

Running back Dierre Hill Jr. led Oregon's ground game with 44 yards on 10 carries, and Dakorien Moore caught four passes for 77 yards. On defense, Matayo Uiagalelei had two sacks and Koi Perich led all tacklers with 11. None of it was enough to offset the turnovers.

What it means

UCLA stays undefeated under coach Bob Chesney, whose team leaned on its run game and its backup quarterback when the starter couldn't finish. Oregon coach Dan Lanning pointed to ball security afterward, saying the mistakes have to get fixed in practice before they show up on game day. The Ducks are 3-2 with cleanup work to do if they want to stay in any playoff conversation.
