Tommy Paul faces Carlos Alcaraz in Vienna quarterfinals with Turin spot on the line

Tommy Paul plays Carlos Alcaraz in the Vienna quarterfinals Friday, a match that carries weight in the race for the season finale in Turin.

Why Tommy Paul is trending

Tommy Paul is trending because he faces Carlos Alcaraz on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, a 500-point tournament, with real stakes attached for Paul's place in the year-end ATP race to Turin. Jannik Sinner is out for the rest of 2026 with an injury, and that opened the No. 9 spot in the race standings, the spot that gets a player a ticket to Italy for the season finale. Paul is trying to add ground there before next week's Paris Masters, a 1,000-point event where the points get harder to find.

This will be the 12th time Paul and Alcaraz have played, and Alcaraz leads the series 9-2. Alcaraz has already beaten Paul at two Grand Slams this year, 7-6(6), 6-4, 7-5 at the Australian Open and 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 at the U.S. Open, and he has won six straight against Paul going back to Paul's last win over him, at the 2023 Toronto Masters.

How both players got to the quarterfinals

Paul, the No. 7 seed in Vienna, reached the quarterfinals by beating Andrey Rublev and Luciano Darderi, both in straight sets. He is playing well this week, for whatever that is worth against the head-to-head he is carrying into Friday.

Alcaraz, seeded second, is still working his way back from a four-month layoff. Since returning he has reached the U.S. Open quarterfinals, won the title in Tokyo, and lost in the third round in Shanghai. In Vienna he has gone through Karen Khachanov and Nikoloz Basilashvili, both in straight sets, to get to Paul.

What the race to Turin has to do with it

The ATP Finals field is the top eight players in the season's points race, but with Sinner done for the year, the ninth spot in the standings now earns the trip to Turin instead. Vienna is a 500-point event held the same week as the other ATP 500 stop in Basel, so every point picked up here counts before the points get tougher to find at next week's Paris Masters, a 1,000-point event. That is a big part of why a Friday quarterfinal in Vienna is pulling outside search traffic. There is a real finish line attached to it, not just a trophy.

Paul is the one who needs this match more. He is trying to make up ground in that race, while Alcaraz is playing for the title and for form heading into Paris. Whatever happens Friday, it adds a 12th data point to a series Alcaraz has controlled for three years, dating back to that 2023 loss in Toronto that Paul has not been able to repeat since.

Other players fighting for the same Turin spots

Paul is not the only quarterfinalist with the race in mind. Alex de Minaur, seeded fifth, is also chasing a place in the Nitto ATP Finals field and has had a good week in Vienna, beating Tomas Machac and Learner Tien to reach the quarterfinals against Matteo Berrettini. Several other players in that same race, Flavio Cobolli, Frances Tiafoe, Rafael Jodar and Novak Djokovic, have already been eliminated from the tournament, which is one more reason the matches left in Vienna carry extra weight for the names still in the field.
