Why Tyler Ulrich is trending

Tyler Ulrich, a 21-year-old safety at Southern Nazarene University, died five days after he was hurt during a game against Ouachita Baptist. The Division II private school in Bethany, Oklahoma announced his death on Thursday, and ESPN first reported it. The sophomore from Azle, Texas was hospitalized after suffering what SNU called a "traumatic injury," and the news has driven heavy search interest as fans and college football followers try to find out what happened to him.

Ulrich was hurt during Southern Nazarene's 49-14 loss to Ouachita Baptist on Saturday. The game stopped for close to an hour while he received medical attention on the field before he was taken to a hospital. He died there five days later, according to ESPN's report on the school's announcement.

What we know

Southern Nazarene Athletics confirmed Ulrich's death in a post on its X account, saying the loss is deeply felt across campus and asking the community to lift up his family, friends and teammates in prayer. Southern Nazarene coach Dustin Hada posted his own tribute on X, calling Ulrich a "Man of God, ultimate example of quiet strength, loyal, worker, joyous."

School president Keith Newman said in a statement that Ulrich died in the hospital "surrounded by the love, prayers, and presence of his family," with teammates and dear friends also present. Newman closed his statement by saying, "May God's peace and comfort be with us all." On Tuesday, two days before the school's public announcement, Southern Nazarene held a campuswide prayer chapel in Ulrich's honor.

Ulrich was in his third season at Southern Nazarene. He had started 16 of the 20 games he appeared in for the program, including six starts this year, and ranked third on the team with 36 tackles on the season.

What we don't know

Southern Nazarene has not said what caused Ulrich's death or described the nature of the injury he suffered against Ouachita Baptist. The school's statements from athletics, Hada and Newman focused on Ulrich's character and the grief on campus rather than medical specifics. ESPN's report did not add further detail beyond what the school shared, so the exact injury and cause of death remain unknown.

What happens next

Southern Nazarene, now 1-5 on the season, has canceled its scheduled game at Southwestern Oklahoma State this Saturday. The school has not said when the team will play again or how the rest of the schedule will be affected. For now, the program says its focus is on supporting Ulrich's family and teammates, the same group it gathered for a prayer chapel earlier in the week.
