Panthers' Brad Marchand out 'a few weeks' with leg injury

Florida's Brad Marchand will miss a few weeks with a leg injury suffered during a win over the Kings, the latest blow to a Panthers roster already missing Aleksander Barkov.

Why this is trending

People are searching Brad Marchand's name because The Associated Press reported the Panthers forward will be out with a left leg injury, but only for "a few weeks." That's the headline detail here: the injury itself is to the left leg, and the expected absence is short-term rather than long-term.

What isn't known yet is an exact return date. The report gives a window, not a day on the calendar. What happens next is simply that window playing out. There's no further update in the record beyond "a few weeks," so any specific date is speculation until the team or AP says otherwise.

How Marchand got hurt

Marchand had not played in the Panthers' first two games of the season. He got hurt in a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, the final game of Florida's season-opening four-game road trip. With 52.6 seconds left, Kings defenseman Brandt Clarke's stick caught Marchand in the face. That spun him around and into the right goal post, and his left leg bent back awkwardly on the play.

He stayed down on the ice for several minutes while an athletic trainer examined him. Teammates Brady Tkachuk and Niko Mikkola helped him to the bench because he could not put weight on the leg, and he was then helped back to the dressing room.

Barkov's injury is part of this story too

Five days before Marchand went down, Aleksander Barkov hurt his own left leg in an overtime loss at San Jose on Thursday. Coach Paul Maurice said this week that Barkov will not need surgery and is expected back in six to eight weeks. Barkov said, "I promise I'll be back in the Panthers' uniform very soon."

Barkov said the memory of last season's injury wave, which sidelined both him and Marchand at different points and helped sink Florida's playoff hopes after back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 2024 and 2025, was the first thing on his mind when he went down again. He said good test results and a team of doctors and physios he trusts eased that worry quickly.

What's next

Barkov said he plans to meet with the Panthers as early as Friday to set a return-to-play plan, including a target date to resume skating. With serious damage ruled out, the locker room has reportedly gone back to needling him about it, with Maurice saying Barkov is on his "annual vacation," a line Barkov said he's fine with.

For Marchand, there's no timeline beyond "a few weeks" on record right now. Until the Panthers or AP put a specific date on it, that's the extent of what's confirmed.
