Oregon QB Dante Moore (concussion) not expected to return this season

Why this is trending now

Oregon quarterback Dante Moore will not play again this season, coach Dan Lanning confirmed Monday, and that is why his name is suddenly everywhere in search. Moore has missed Oregon's past three games with a concussion and still has not been medically cleared to return.

The stakes make it news. Moore walked away from a likely top pick in the 2026 NFL draft to come back to Oregon for his senior year, and he opened the season as a preseason Heisman Trophy contender on a team ranked No. 2 in the AP preseason poll with national championship aspirations. The Ducks have not looked the same without him, and the question now is how a team that started the year with championship talk finishes it.

How the injury happened

Moore got hurt on Sept. 26 against USC. He scrambled up the field, tried to slide, and was hit late by linebacker Desman Stephens II in the second quarter. He stayed down for an extended period before being taken by ambulance to Los Angeles General Medical Center for evaluation. Oregon later said Moore had sustained a concussion, though his MRI and CT scans came back clean. It was the kind of moment that stops a broadcast, and it ended up changing Oregon's season.

What is known and what isn't

What's known: Moore has missed three straight games, he returned to practice and has even thrown the ball in recent weeks, and he still has not been cleared to play in a game. What's not known: Lanning has never given a return timeline, and he made clear Monday that clearing Moore for a game is out of Oregon's hands, something the program cannot control the way it can a practice setting for the scout team.

Lanning stressed the decision is not Moore's doing. He said Moore wants to play and that sitting out has nothing to do with Moore being unhappy with how the season has gone. "We'd love to have Dante out there," Lanning said, adding Moore will remain a big part of the team.

What happens next for Oregon

Without Moore, Oregon's offense has stalled, scoring fewer than 20 points in all three games he has missed, two of them losses. Backup Dylan Raiola and third-string Brock Thomas have both started but have not found a rhythm. Before his injury, Moore had completed 69.7% of his passes for 926 yards with nine touchdowns and zero interceptions in four games.

Sunday's 21-10 loss to Illinois effectively ended Oregon's shot at a third straight College Football Playoff appearance, and Lanning fired offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer afterward. Offensive analyst and quarterbacks coach Jay Johnson, who is in his first year on Oregon's staff, has coached in college since 1994 and was most recently the offensive coordinator at Wyoming and Michigan State, will take over playcalling.
