Hockey in September: the NHL cut camp to eight days and nobody is easing in
The whole preseason is 65 games in eight days. The regular season is 84 games and it starts a week from tonight. Monday's slate already looked like guys playing for jobs, because they are.
Here is the new math, straight from the league. The 2026-27 preseason runs Saturday, Sept. 19 through Saturday, Sept. 26: eight days, 65 games, 36 venues. That is the first shortened camp under the new collective bargaining agreement, and it exists because the regular season grew to 84 games, two more divisional games per team. Opening night is Tuesday, Sept. 29, a tripleheader on ESPN in the U.S. and a doubleheader on Sportsnet in Canada.
Four exhibition games is not a preseason. It is a tryout.
In the old format a fringe player got six or seven looks to make a roster. Now he gets a handful, and the coaches are deciding in real time. That changes how people play. Nobody coasts through a preseason game when it is one of four. I played a sport where you do not get warm-up matches before a tournament; you show up and the first round counts. Hockey just moved a lot closer to that, and Monday night looked like it.
What Monday actually gave us
Bowen Byram, in his first game as a Blackhawk, scored three times, the last one 29 seconds into overtime to beat Minnesota 4-3. A hat trick in your debut for a new team is a statement in any month. In a four-game preseason it is a headline.
In Newark, Jack Hughes scored the tiebreaking goal with 2:12 left in the third and the Devils beat the Rangers 3-2. Timo Meier had a goal and an assist. Two new arrivals, Anthony Mantha and Luke Evangelista, made their Devils debuts. Dylan Garand stopped 28 for New York and deserved better.

Read the roundup and count the new sweaters. Byram in Chicago. Stuart Skinner making 31 saves in his Winnipeg debut in a 3-1 win over Colorado. Mason McTavish playing his first game for St. Louis after coming over from Anaheim. Mantha and Evangelista in New Jersey. Jet Greaves stopping all 16 shots he saw in a 1-0 shootout win for Columbus over Detroit. Bryan Rust with a goal and two assists in a Penguins win. Jonny Brodzinski scoring twice for Washington against Philadelphia.
None of those are small names, and a lot of them are in new places. When the offseason reshuffles this many pieces, the shortened camp hurts most: chemistry that used to have three weeks now has eight days, and then the games count. Whichever teams figured out their pairs and lines fastest are going to steal points in October from teams still sorting it out.
Where I land
I like it. An 84-game season starting in September means real hockey while football is still on, and a preseason short enough that you cannot sleepwalk through it. The trade-off is a rougher first month. Expect sloppy games, a few surprising healthy scratches, and goalies who look great in October because the shooters in front of them still do not know each other. That is the product for a few weeks. It is still better than exhibition hockey nobody watched.
