Marchand exits Panthers' win in 2nd period with leg injury
Brad Marchand left Florida's 2-1 win over the Kings in the second period with a left leg injury and won't be evaluated until Thursday.
Why Marchand is trending
People are searching his name because Brad Marchand, who had just made his season debut on Sunday, went down with a left leg injury in the second period of the Panthers' 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night in Los Angeles. He did not return for the third period.
Here is what is known. Marchand was hurt, he could not put weight on the leg, and teammates had to help him off. Here is what is not known. Coach Paul Maurice said after the game he had no update on Marchand's condition, only that "we'll get him looked at probably Thursday." So the real answer on severity and timeline is still a couple days out.
How it happened
With 52.6 seconds left in the second period, Kings defenseman Brandt Clarke caught Marchand with a stick to the face. That spun Marchand around and sent him into the goal post, and his left leg bent back awkwardly on the collision.
He was down on the ice for several minutes while an athletic trainer examined him. Brady Tkachuk and Niko Mikkola helped him to the bench, he still could not put weight on the leg, and he was helped back to the dressing room from there. Clarke drew a four-minute double-minor on the play, his second penalty of the night after an earlier interference call for a cross-check on Eetu Luostarinen, who took a stinger on that hit but returned to the game.
A rough start to the season
Marchand is 38 and in his third season with Florida after 16 years in Boston. He was traded to the Panthers in March 2025 and helped them win their second straight Stanley Cup that same season. Last season's title defense got wrecked by injuries instead.
Now it is happening again early. The Panthers are on a four-game West Coast trip to open this season, and they have already lost two key players on it. Aleksander Barkov hurt his left leg in an overtime loss at San Jose last Thursday and is expected to miss six to eight weeks, no surgery needed. Maurice said the team has some experience with this by now: "we have a little experience with Sasha going down," and pointed to the roster's depth, saying "the tank is deep right now."
What happens next
Nothing is official on Marchand yet. The team's plan, by Maurice's own account, is to get him looked at on Thursday, which is when an actual update on the leg should come. Until then there is no diagnosis and no timeline, just the description of how he got hurt and that he could not put weight on it leaving the ice.
