Jeremiyah Love trending well to play Sunday despite ankle reinjury
Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur says the rookie running back is trending toward playing against Detroit after aggravating his ankle in last week's loss to the Giants.
Why Jeremiyah Love is trending
Jeremiyah Love is trending because his ankle is in question two days before the Cardinals play the Lions. Arizona coach Mike LaFleur told reporters Friday that the rookie running back is "trending well" toward playing Sunday after reinjuring his right ankle.
Here is what's known. Love practiced in a limited role Wednesday and Thursday. What's not yet known is his official game designation, since Friday's injury report had not been released at the time LaFleur spoke. That report will determine whether Love is cleared, questionable, or out. The Cardinals host the Lions Sunday, and that game has not been played yet.
How the ankle injury happened
Love first suffered a high ankle sprain in the Cardinals' second preseason game. He aggravated the same ankle early in the second quarter of Sunday's 36-24 loss to the New York Giants, during a second-and-13 play on which quarterback Jacoby Brissett had his throwing arm hit while attempting a pass intended for Marvin Harrison Jr. that was intercepted.
Love was seen on the bench getting the ankle worked on during that game.
Managing the ankle the rest of the season
LaFleur said the issue is not a one-week fix. "It's a maintenance thing with ankles," he said, adding that it will require attention all season unless it heals fully.
On how Love is feeling, LaFleur said only Love truly knows, but described him as doing good and still moving. "He's out there practicing, he's running around," LaFleur said.
Love's season so far and the matchup ahead
Through the season, Love has rushed for 223 yards and a touchdown on 55 carries. The Cardinals have not yet played the Lions. Sunday's game will be the next test of how much Love's ankle can handle, and the Friday injury report, once released, will show his actual designation for that game.
