The final: Commanders 27, Eagles 10
Did the Eagles win? No, the Eagles lost 27-10 to the Washington Commanders in Week 8 Sunday Night Football. Washington shut out Philadelphia over the final three quarters, and Jayden Daniels threw a touchdown pass for the Commanders.
Saquon Barkley was active and played through the hamstring and back injuries that limited him a week earlier against the Dallas Cowboys. The All-Pro running back had missed two games with the hamstring injury before returning that Monday night, when he reaggravated the hamstring and hurt his back. He still finished with 62 rushing yards, a touchdown and 9 receiving yards on 9 touches in just 10 snaps that game. "I feel decent. Good week of work, rehab," Barkley said after Friday's practice, adding that he does not want to look back someday and wonder if he could have given football a chance.
Who the Eagles were missing
Philadelphia was again without wide receivers DeVonta Smith (hamstring) and Dontayvion Wicks (ankle), both inactive for a second straight game. Linebacker Jihaad Campbell (hamstring/quad), return specialist Britain Covey (knee), cornerback Jonathan Jones (hamstring) and offensive lineman Jake Majors also sat out. With Smith, Wicks and Covey out, the receiving group against Washington was Makai Lemon, Darius Cooper, Elijah Moore and Hollywood Brown.
The running back shuffle
The Eagles put running back Dameon Pierce on injured reserve during the week and signed Jaydon Blue to the active roster. Elijah Mitchell was elevated from the practice squad for the second of three possible times and was active alongside Blue and Barkley. Mitchell had made an impact catching passes out of the backfield the week before, after Pierce exited that game. Philadelphia also elevated outside linebacker Mason Reiger from the practice squad, marking his NFL debut as an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin.
The defense Philadelphia had on the field
The Eagles had a rare full set of edge rushers available, with Jonathan Greenard a full practice participant, Jalyx Hunt working in a limited role and Nolan Smith clearing the concussion protocol. Defensive tackle Moro Ojomo was limited in practice all week with a neck injury but was also available. Cornerback Jakorian Bennett, the only Eagle listed as questionable entering the weekend, was downgraded to out. All three Eagles quarterbacks, Tanner McKee, Joe Milton and Cole Payton, were active for the game.
