Dalen Terry agrees to two-year deal with Thunder
Dalen Terry has agreed to a two-year deal with the Thunder, who needed depth after injuries to Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace.
Why Dalen Terry agreed to a deal with the Thunder
Dalen Terry has agreed to a two-year deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder, sources told ESPN. The agreement fills the open roster spot the Thunder had been holding for free agent Ochai Agbaji, a plan the front office paused once a fresh wave of injuries changed what the roster needed most.
That shift traces back to Chet Holmgren, who is out two-plus months with a small patellar tendon tear, and to Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace, who both face the possibility of season-ending surgeries. With three rotation players sidelined at once, Oklahoma City reconsidered the Agbaji agreement on Friday and turned to Terry to fill the final roster spot instead. Three rotation spots opening up in the same stretch is the kind of run that forces a front office to move fast.
The injuries that opened the roster spot
Holmgren's patellar tendon tear is the most recent and most costly of the three, since he is Oklahoma City's starting big man and is expected to miss at least two months. Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace are each dealing with injuries that carry the possibility of season-ending surgery, according to the report. The sheet does not say whether either procedure has been finalized.
Those three situations together are why the Thunder stepped back from finalizing the Agbaji deal and why Terry's contract came together instead. It is roster math forced by injuries, not a signing the front office had planned heading into the season. For a team dealing with that much at once, adding a healthy body with NBA experience is the practical move, regardless of what the stat sheet says.
Who is Dalen Terry
Terry is 24 years old, stands 6-foot-6, and is entering his fifth NBA season. Oklahoma City will be his third team, following stints with the Chicago Bulls and the Philadelphia 76ers. He was the 18th overall pick in the 2022 draft.
Last season Terry appeared in 48 combined games for Chicago and Philadelphia, averaging 3.7 points and 1.8 rebounds. Across 218 career games he has averaged 3.5 points. He spent this past offseason training with the Golden State Warriors and attended that team's training camp last month before the Thunder deal came together. None of that camp time with Golden State turned into a roster spot there, and now he lands with a team that needs depth more than polish.
What happens next for Oklahoma City
For now, Oklahoma City has Terry to help cover the roster spot it set aside while Holmgren, Williams and Wallace work through their injuries. Whether the Agbaji agreement the Thunder paused on Friday gets revisited later in the season is not addressed in the reporting so far. Until Holmgren is back, the Thunder's frontcourt depth is the thing to watch. Terry at least gives Oklahoma City a healthy body with NBA minutes behind him, which is the immediate need the front office was trying to fill.
