Chiefs beat Chargers 22-6 at Arrowhead
The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Los Angeles Chargers 22-6 at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday to move to 5-0 this season. The Chargers fell to 0-6. Kenneth Walker III did the heavy lifting, carrying 19 times for 128 yards and two touchdowns, and Kansas City leaned on him whenever it needed a yard or two.
It was not a clean game for either side. Kansas City finished with 22 first downs and 422 total yards to the Chargers' 15 first downs and 259 yards, but both teams turned the ball over twice, and Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker missed a point-after try and a field goal attempt to go with his three makes.
Walker's touchdowns and three Butker field goals built the lead
Kansas City controlled the scoring from the opening quarter. Butker hit a 44-yard field goal with 11:20 left in the first for a 3-0 lead, then Walker scored from 33 yards out, though the point-after try failed, making it 9-0. Cameron Dicker answered with a 23-yard field goal for the Chargers to cut it to 9-3 before the first quarter ended.
Walker scored again from 2 yards out early in the second quarter, and Butker's extra point was good this time, pushing it to 16-3. Butker added a 50-yard field goal with 2 seconds left in the half for a 19-3 Kansas City lead. Dicker's 30-yard field goal in the third quarter was the only scoring the Chargers managed after halftime, and Butker closed it out with a 30-yard field goal in the fourth for the final margin, 22-6.
Mahomes gets his 100th win, Chargers can't finish drives
Patrick Mahomes went 23 of 30 for 272 yards with one interception, picking up his 100th career win. Xavier Worthy caught seven passes for 73 yards, and Travis Kelce added five catches for 53 yards as Kansas City worked around receiver injuries. "We've gotten by that pretty quickly," Mahomes said of last year's loss to the Chargers in this same building. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said simply, "It's great to win in this league."
Justin Herbert threw for 204 yards and an interception on 22-of-37 passing, and ran for 26 yards on five carries. Quentin Johnston had just one catch, but it went for 57 yards. Tarheeb Still led the Chargers with eight tackles. "It's obviously been tough," Herbert said afterward. Nick Bolton led all tacklers with 11 for Kansas City, and Chamarri Conner had the game's only sack.
Chiefs stay unbeaten, Chargers hunting for a first win
Kansas City is one of three unbeaten teams left in the league, alongside San Francisco and Minnesota, both of whom were on their bye week at 5-0. The Chargers are one of two winless teams remaining, with Miami sitting at 0-5 on its own bye. Los Angeles coach Jim Harbaugh did not have much to offer afterward. "There's no justification," he said.
The Chargers came into this season off back-to-back 11-win years and are now off to their worst start since 2000. For Kansas City, the win keeps the roll going after a bye week, with Reid now 23-5 in regular-season games coming off one.
